Rebecca Shatwell is a freelance curator and writer based in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 2007 she founded alt.gallery a new space focusing on the links between visual art, music culture and sound, based within alt.vinyl record shop. Her curatorial practice is cross artform and since 1999 has involved working with contemporary visual art, music, moving image, new media and live art. She has recently curated the opening programme for alt.gallery, which includes: Harry Smith Anthology Remixed, Daniel Johnston: It’s a Beautiful Life and Die Tödliche Doris: Soundless Music. Projects currently under development for alt.gallery include the first UK exhibition by Japanese artist and Boredoms singer Yamataka Eye. Other recent projects include co-curating the exhibition programme for Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival 2007, with Iain Pate. The festival explored artists’ relationship with film culture and presented sixteen works in nine historic locations across the town. Previous freelance curatorial work has included: Laptop Lovers (ICA Digital Studio, London, 2003), Eartours Club (CCA, Glasgow, 2002/03), Go Away (RCA, London, 1999) and Social Security (Ex-Teresa, Mexico City, 1998). She has previously been employed as New Media Curator at Pavilion in Leeds (2003), Education Programmer at CCA, Glasgow (1999-2003) and was on the board of directors of The Centre arts commissioning agency in Glasgow (2002-2005). Since 2003 she has worked as Visual Arts Officer (Media and Live Art) at Arts Council England, North East.
