Ele Carpenter

Ele Carpenter is a curator, artist and researcher working within the field of visual arts and new media culture in the public realm. Her practice involves curating context specific programmes of contemporary art, film and workshops in collaboration with artists, filmmakers, universities, galleries and arts agencies.

Ele is currently completing Doctoral research with CRUMB, University of Sunderland. Her thesis explores the relationship between politicised socially engaged and new media art. The research involved curating RISK: Creative Action in Political Culture (2005), CCA Glasgow; and has led to the development of the Open Source Embroidery project.

As an Associate Curator, Ele has worked with Connecting Principle (2007) an interdisciplinary research forum at Newcastle University www.ncl.ac.uk/connectingprinciple; CCA:Glasgow (2003-2005), PVA Media Lab (2004); and the Star and Shadow Cinema Collective (2002 – 2007). In 2005 Ele established the Mobile Cinema, a caravan for screening artists film and video, in partnership with Clare Ruddock. www.themobilecinema.org.uk From 1997-2002 Ele was curator of the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art www.ngca.co.uk, Sunderland, and instigated many major exhibitions, including co-curating Nothing with Graham Gussin.
